Visitors traveling to Taiwan are now able apply for their visas online, according to the Bureau of Consular Affairs (BOCA) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

BOCA's e-visa system was launched in January as a way of helping to simplify the visa application process for overseas visitors.

According to BOCA, Taiwan will be the 24th country in the world to allow foreigners to apply for visas online, following a precedent set by countries including the U.S., Canada, Cambodia, Myanmar and Bangladesh.

Currently, foreigners are required to apply in person at the nation's overseas consulate.

With the new system, visitors planning to stay temporarily in Taiwan for business or tourism can simply register online for an e-visa that allows for up to 30 days of stay.
